Pain:
Pain is usually caused by stool or secretions collecting in the raw wound. After each bowel movement, wash yourself with soap and water and then pat the area dry or blow-dry it with a hair dryer on cool setting. Then, take a cotton ball, dip it in dry corn starch powder and lay it right on the wound. Take a shower at least twice a day, bend forward and pull the buttocks apart quite hard to open the wound so the water from the shower can get in.If it is still painful, you have not pulled it apart enough! Do it again! If it is still painful, ask your spouse to clean the deepest part of the wound with hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip, while you spread it open. Again, dry as above and apply a powdered cotton ball.
Use the pain pills if necessary but, they may be constipating. Sometimes applying ice or the Anurex reusable suppository stick (available at most large pharmacies) helps ease the pain.
Discharge:
Discharge is normal and occurs because of the open wound. Any time the cotton ball becomes moist, change it. The wound will continue to discharge until it has healed, which may take a few weeks.Bleeding:
Slight blood spotting occurs for the same reason and may be ignored. If there is a lot of bleeding, lie face down with four pillows under your hips so your bottom is higher than your heart. Put 2 or 3 cotton balls into the wound and apply firm pressure right on the bleeding site. Stay there for 15-20 minutes. The bleeding will stop as long as you put pressure right on the spot that is bleeding. If there is a lot of bleeding and it persists, please go to your nearest Emergency Department.
